When we talk about achieving something or becoming better at something, we start with an idea in mind.
Like a vision.
Then we put a plan together.
And then we start taking action.
What happens after that?
We hope we are getting better. We hope we are moving closer to our goal. We hope our actions every day are making an impact.
“I feel like I’m losing weight.”
“I think I’m getting better at my job.”
“It feels like I ran a lot longer today than yesterday.”
Feeling. Thinking. Musing. Hoping.
But not measuring.
Galileo was unequivocal in his statement.
Measure what can be. What can’t be, figure out HOW it can be.
In other words, MEASURE.
Without it, you have no progress. You don’t know if you’re moving the needle. You don’t even know if you’re moving.
It remains a feeling.
(And we know how misleading THAT is!)
What is the ONE area of your life that you are passionate about improving?
You have a plan. You’ve started taking action. How about measuring?
If there is no measurement, how are you tracking improvement?
Measure. If you can’t, figure out how you can.
