There is a great fable by Aesop that brings this point to life.
There was a milkmaid who was returning after milking the cows. As she was walking back, she was thinking to herself “This is good, rich milk”.
“It’ll give me plenty of butter to churn. I will then sell the butter in the market. With the money I make, I will buy a lot of eggs for hatching. How nice it will be when they are all hatched and the yard is full of young chicks.”
“Then when May day comes, I will sell them. With that money, I will buy a beautiful dress to wear.”
As she was musing, her pail of milk dropped to the floor.
We have so many desires, wishes, plans, goals for our life. And we want to envision them all at once. And make them a reality all at once!
Better to focus on our next task and do it to the best of our ability. It’s the most immediate action we can take.
Focus on getting the milk home first.
The rest can wait.
Try to clarify your vision for the immediate future.
Not the next 5 years. But the next 5 days. What are the important tasks at hand. And how do they lead you to the bigger tasks and goals.
Focused action every day.
